Islamabad : Pakistan’s Foreign Office on Thursday said that the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and the Lucerne Summit reflect the country’s firm conviction that dialogue and diplomatic engagement remain the most effective tools for resolving disputes and preventing conflicts.
Addressing a weekly media briefing in Islamabad, Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi stated that Pakistan has been encouraged by the positive response it has received from various governments, international stakeholders, and members of the global community regarding its efforts to promote peace, dialogue, and regional de-escalation.
He said the appreciation shown by the international community underscores its trust in Pakistan’s dedication to advancing peace, stability, security, and constructive cooperation at both the regional and international levels.
Andrabi thanked all friendly countries and partners that supported Pakistan’s initiatives, describing their cooperation and encouragement as greatly appreciated.
The spokesperson also acknowledged the role of the Pakistani media, praising its responsible and professional approach throughout the process. He noted that the media demonstrated restraint, discretion, and maturity by safeguarding the confidentiality and trust necessary for successful mediation and facilitation efforts.
Responding to a question, Andrabi termed the recent visit of Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian to Pakistan a landmark occasion, pointing out that it marked his first overseas trip following the war.
He said the visit enabled both countries to reaffirm their shared commitment to promoting peace and stability, which emerged as a central outcome of the high-level engagements.
According to Andrabi, the visit also reinforced Pakistan’s role as a mediator and facilitator, while the Iranian leadership once again expressed confidence in Islamabad’s peace-building efforts, a gesture that Pakistan highly values.
He added that the significance of the visit extended beyond its historic nature, as it also contributed positively to strengthening bilateral relations between Pakistan and Iran.
Answering another query, the spokesperson said technical-level negotiations between the United States and Iran are continuing.
Commenting on the Strait of Hormuz, Andrabi stressed that Pakistan considers the strategic waterway a critical international maritime passage essential for global commerce, energy transportation, and economic stability.
He reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for ensuring that the strait remains open, secure, and accessible for uninterrupted international navigation.
When asked whether Pakistan could pursue a diplomatic approach with Afghanistan similar to its facilitation efforts in the US-Iran context, Andrabi said Islamabad consistently engaged with Kabul through diplomatic channels from 2021 to 2025.
However, he noted that the security situation eventually exceeded Pakistan’s tolerance threshold by late 2025. He emphasized that any future diplomatic progress would require credible assurances and practical steps from the Afghan side to prevent the use of Afghan territory for attacks against Pakistan and to help restore mutual confidence between the two neighbours.
