Five Years On: Remembering Tariq Aziz — The Voice of PTV

Lahore, June 17, 2025 — “Dekhti aankhon, sunte kaanon ko Tariq Aziz ka salaam!” — the iconic greeting that echoed across Pakistani households for decades remains etched in the nation’s memory. Today marks the fifth death anniversary of Tariq Aziz, the legendary television host, actor, poet, and politician who passed away on June 17, 2020.

Pioneer of Pakistani Television

Born on April 28, 1936, in Jalandhar (British India), Tariq Aziz began his professional journey with Radio Pakistan in Lahore. In 1964, when Pakistan Television (PTV) was launched, he became the first male announcer on the channel. His unmatched charisma and eloquence soon made him a household name, especially as the host of “Neelam Ghar”, a quiz show that ran for nearly 40 years and became a national institution.

Versatile Talent in Film and Poetry

In addition to television, Aziz made notable contributions to Pakistani cinema. He starred in several films, including Insaniyat (1967), Salgirah, Qasam Us Waqt Ki, Katari, Charagh Kahan Roshni Kahan, and Haar Gaya Insaan. He was also a poet in both Urdu and Punjabi, sharing reflections of society, patriotism, and human values through his verses.

National Recognition and Political Service

In recognition of his services, the Government of Pakistan awarded him the Pride of Performance in 1992. Tariq Aziz also served as a Member of the National Assembly from 1997 to 1999, highlighting his commitment to public service beyond the entertainment industry.

Five years after his passing, Tariq Aziz is remembered as a towering figure in Pakistani media — a pioneer whose voice became the soul of PTV.
