27th constitutional amendment introduced in senate, proposes federal constitutional court

Islamabad: In the Senate session, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar presented the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill, which had previously been approved by the Federal Cabinet under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The draft of the bill proposes the establishment of a Federal Constitutional Court, which will be responsible for adjudicating constitutional disputes and interpreting the constitution. As part of the reforms, certain constitutional powers currently held by the Supreme Court will be transferred to this new court, and the ** suo motu** (self-initiated) powers of the Supreme Court will be abolished.

The Federal Constitutional Court will have equal representation from the Chief Justice and the four provincial Chief Justices, with a tenure of three years. The court’s decisions will be binding on all other courts in the country.

The bill has been referred to the relevant Standing Committee for further review and consideration.
